StackFloss is software for independent dental practices. It connects to the practice management system (PMS) and finds care patients are eligible for but haven’t received: care that is already approved, already due, or already covered. Much of it belongs to patients already on the schedule. Find it. Act on it. Automate it.
We build on five beliefs: people first, work inside what you have, earn every step, patient data comes first, and plain talk. For this contract, that means HIPAA isn’t a checkbox. It’s how the app is built.
We’re racing to launch our MVP customer app. You’ll lead its front end as an independent contractor and connect it to our AWS backend.
The engagement
This is a remote 1099 contract to deliver the StackFloss MVP front end and hand it off in a maintainable state. You will turn our discovery work into a fast, accessible, HIPAA-aware web app wired to services on AWS.
You set your own methods, tools and working hours. We agree on deliverables and milestones up front and review progress weekly. You will work with our CTO, the founders and our AWS infrastructure contractor.
Scope of work and deliverables
- Foundation: Next.js (App Router), TypeScript and Tailwind project with a design system built from StackFloss brand tokens and accessible primitives (Radix/shadcn).
- Core screens: role-based home screens, the pre-visit “Today” view, prioritized work lists, patient detail, a dollar-based results funnel and the PracticeChat interface.
- Plan gating: Diagnose, Recover and Automate states, including honest locked and preview screens.
- Security and HIPAA-aware UI: role-based access, idle timeout, patient-info masking, no patient data in URLs, and a record of every action.
- AWS integration: documented API contracts, then a move from typed mock data to live AWS services (API Gateway, Lambda, Cognito, S3, CloudFront or similar), including Cognito sign-in and authorization.
- Delivery pipeline: CI/CD, preview environments, and monitoring and error tracking.
- Handoff: a README, architecture notes, a component inventory and a recorded walkthrough, so that a future team can own the code.
What you bring
- 7+ years of professional web development, including 4+ years as a senior or lead front-end engineer.
- An established independent practice: you have delivered at least two client projects as a contractor or consultancy.
- Expert React and TypeScript, plus production experience with Next.js (App Router, server components, route handlers).
- Deep hands-on AWS experience: Cognito, API Gateway, Lambda, S3, CloudFront, IAM and CloudWatch at minimum.
- Infrastructure as code with AWS CDK, Terraform or CloudFormation.
- Experience building secure apps that handle sensitive data (HIPAA, SOC 2 or similar).
- A track record of taking a product from zero to launch on a fixed timeline.
- Strong accessibility (WCAG 2.1 AA) and performance habits for data-dense desktop apps.
- Clear written status updates and comfort working async.
Nice to have
- Healthcare or dental software experience, especially with practice management systems such as Open Dental.
- AWS certification (Solutions Architect, Developer or Security).
- Experience building conversational interfaces like PracticeChat, where every answer shows the numbers behind it.
- Data visualization experience (funnels, trends, dashboards).
- Experience deploying Next.js on both Vercel and AWS (Amplify, or containers on ECS/Fargate).

Confidentiality and intellectual property
This project involves proprietary technology. Detailed architecture, customer integrations, internal data flows, source code and implementation methods are disclosed only after the appropriate agreements are in place. Selected contractors will sign:
- A Mutual Non-Disclosure Agreement (before the project scoping call)
- An Independent Contractor Agreement and Statement of Work
- A Confidential Information and Invention Assignment Agreement
- A Business Associate Agreement, as required for HIPAA
- The StackFloss Acceptable Use & Security Acknowledgment
All code, configuration, design-system work, documentation and other project-specific work produced under the engagement will be owned by StackFloss, as defined in the contractor agreement. Access to AWS, repositories and internal systems is granted on a least-privilege basis.
